The benefits of 3D design modelling and printing
As a potter with a background in handmade crafts, doing a one-eighty in my career as an artist and entrepreneur was a lot to take in.
I started on my 3D design journey as a complete novice and approached it by looking at some of the benefits of 3D Printing.
Mostly I had to answer why 3D Printing and modelling in clay is the right path for me going forward?.
Once I got over the small hurdle of making my mind think differently about technology and art, I became more and more aware of the advantages of 3D modelling and printing on a broader scale.
It has now become easier for anyone to learn 3D design with the use of online tools and courses.
This was great for me when I started out as I considered myself to be a very small fish in a great big ocean of tech sharks.
I had to consider the cost effectiveness of this new way of design.
It is not like I had millions secretly buried in our tiny garden outside.
After a bit of digging through articles and chatting to people in the industry I found myself pleasantly surprised.
3D Modelling is a cheaper and more efficient way to design an idea or product prototype, and anyone can do it. All you need is a computer, a mouse and a free downloadable 3D Design software.
You also do not need to own a 3D printer– you can create your 3D design, and have it printed by another company, giving you a prototype of your design in the type of material that you want.
You do not need to be a computer wizard, all you need is an idea, and the willingness to try something new.
Many industries are already using 3D technologies to create and explore mechanical innovations and prototyping.
3D Design and Modelling has helped change the way I think about design.
I can design a form into something unique, that I have sculpted, even if it is not by hand.
I may not have studied to be a designer, nor did I study to be a potter -everything I know is self-taught, with the help of courses and people along the way.
I always imagined my story going on a certain path, but I have learnt to embrace change.
Learning how I can create art by printing with clay was a crazy dream to begin with, but the benefits gave me that extra push to find my way.
Whatever your background – 3D design opens the doors for so many different types of design, which really excites my brain!
If like me you are looking to try something new, be it for a hobby or to explore a new path, have a look and do some digging, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised by what you find… I was.
